Henderson Hospital Named One of Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals

By | News

Henderson Hospital demonstrated lower inpatient mortality rates,
with fewer readmissions and complications.

Henderson Hospital was identified as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® according to an independent quality analysis provided by PINC AITM, the technology and services brand of Premier, Inc., and reported by Fortune. It was ranked in the category of Top Large Community Hospitals.

To create the list, an objective, quantitative analysis of publicly available data was conducted to identify the top hospitals in the United States. The primary purpose of the PINC AITM 100 Top Hospitals® program is to inspire hospital and health system leaders to pursue higher performance and deliver added value to patients and communities. The program leverages transparent, nonbiased data to help inform strategies for sustained performance. Organizations do not apply to participate in the study, and award recipients do not pay to market their honor.

“This was a wonderful surprise,” said Sam Kaufman, CEO of Henderson Hospital. “Our entire team works tirelessly to provide top-quality care to our patients every shift, every day. It’s a collective effort across our medical staff and clinical teams, and I’m incredibly proud of them.”

Along with the Fortune and Premier’s PINC award, Henderson Hospital has also received 12 consecutive A grades from The Leapfrog Group, along with high profile awards from the American Heart Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians and The Joint Commission.

100 Top Hospitals® Program Performance

This year, based on comparisons between the study’s top performers and a peer group of similar hospitals, the analysis found that the top performers of the 100 Top Hospitals® program delivered better outcomes while operating more efficiently and at a lower cost. Compared to peer hospitals, this year’s top performers had:

• 39 percent fewer inpatient deaths than peer hospitals.

• 26.6 percent fewer patients with complications.

• 30.6 percent fewer healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

• A 21.1 percent lower inpatient expense per discharge.

• 0.5-day shorter average length of stay.

• Better reported patient experience scores, with a top-box Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score of 73 percent versus 67 percent for peer hospitals.

“Hospitals and health systems continue to recognize the vital importance of performance improvement for high-quality patient care, proving value and enabling the innovations that drive healthcare forward,” said Leigh Anderson, Premier’s Chief Operating Officer and the leader of PINC AITM. “The transparent, non-biased and actionable data this study provides helps leaders make informed decisions for change and proves that Henderson Hospital excels across a range of core performance indicators, which can directly lead to significantly higher quality patient outcomes, with fewer readmissions and complications.”

About the Study

The PINC AITM 100 Top Hospitals® program focuses on short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of patients. Researchers evaluated 2,601 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals and health systems. All research was based on the following public data sets: Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Care Compare website.

Eligible hospitals are ranked for performance across 10 measures within five domains. Final rank is determined based on performance for all individual measures. To allow for fair comparison, hospitals are stratified and then ranked within five separate peer groups with a pre- determined number of high-performing hospitals: major teaching hospitals (15 facilities), teaching hospitals (25 facilities), large community hospitals (20 facilities), medium community hospitals (20 facilities), and small community hospitals (20 facilities).

Soda Free Summer Challenge Kicks Off May 3

By | Featured, News

Health District promotes healthy alternatives to sugary drinks

Most Americans are consuming too many added sugars in their diet. Sugar-sweetened beverages including sodas, energy drinks, and fruit drinks are a main source of added sugars. A regular, 12-ounce can of soda can contain a full 10 teaspoons of sugar. Because of the added sugar, soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages can contribute to health issues including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.

To raise awareness of this issue, the Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion will conduct its annual Soda Free Summer Challenge from Friday, May 3, through Saturday, Aug. 31. The campaign urges everyone to choose healthier beverages in favor of soda and other sugary drinks.

For information on how to participate in the Soda Free Summer Challenge, visit www.GetHealthyClarkCounty.org or www.VivaSaludable.org. To learn about local, upcoming events associated with this campaign, visit the Get Healthy Clark County Community Calendar or Calendario de la comunidad.

Sugary drinks include sodas, sports drinks and fruit drinks, as well as tea and coffee sweetened with added sugar. Nationally, 63% of youth and 49% of adults reported having sugary drinks once daily or more. On average, children consume more than 30 gallons of sugary drinks per year, enough to fill an entire bathtub.

The average American consumes approximately 17 teaspoons of added sugar each day. Adolescents (12-19 years old) are the highest consumers of sugar-sweetened beverages. In Clark County, 11.4% of adolescents drank one can, bottle or glass of soda at least once per day during 2019. That rate increased to 13.3% in 2021. However, the 2021 rate was down significantly from the 23.3% recorded in 2007.

According to the American Heart Association, men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons of added sugar per day. For women, the recommended daily maximum is 6 teaspoons. Adults and children are encouraged to limit sugary drinks and opt for healthier alternatives including water, unsweetened tea and plain milk.

Consumers are advised to read nutrition labels to determine how much added sugar is included in their drinks. For information about how to identify added sugars, visit the sugary beverages web page on the Get Healthy or the Viva Saludable Spanish language website.

Southern Nevada Health District Honors Public Health Heroes

By | News

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is honoring its 2024 Public Health Heroes, who play a vital role in creating a healthier and more resilient community for all. They were recognized during the Board of Public Health meeting on Thursday, April 25.

A Public Health Hero is an individual or organization whose efforts positively affect the health and well-being of our community. SNHD staff nominated this year’s honorees, who are employed by the Clark County School District (CCSD) and Roseman University of Health Sciences.

Clark County School District Health Services Department
Jennifer Budzinski, Employee Occupational Health Strategy Director and Sherri McPartlin, Health Services Director III/Chief Nurse, are being recognized for their work in addressing the active tuberculosis exposures in Clark County School District during 2023. They provided staff, facilities and support, helping SNHD navigate, plan and execute large scale testing. CCSD has developed a close working relationship with SNHD, and its efforts are integral to educating and supporting the community.

Budzinski is a registered nurse who has been in the health care field for 23 years. She began her career in emergency medicine and trauma. For the past 10 years she has worked for CCSD; seven years as a school nurse and three years as Employee Occupational Health Strategy Director. She became a director during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to ensure that students and staff could return to in-person instruction safely after seeing the impact of isolation on students. Along with her duties involving staff health initiatives for all employees, she often collaborates with local, state and federal agencies. Her work with SNHD involves school-related infectious disease cases.

McPartlin is responsible for developing and implementing safe health policies and procedures in all CCSD schools. She directs the activities of the Health Services Department, while serving as a consultant to CCSD administrators as well as community and state agencies in the administration of the school health program. McPartlin has over 27 years of nursing experience, including both critical care and school health.

Clark County School District Risk Management Department
Director Kimberly Krumland and Safety Coordinator Stephen Johnston of the CCSD Risk Management and Safety Department have the responsibility of ensuring that the 300,000-plus students enrolled in CCSD attend schools that meet or exceed the health and safety requirements of the Nevada Administrative Code. As leaders, they supervise a department consisting of 15 staff members who work tirelessly to eliminate or mitigate hazards on school campuses throughout the Valley. In addition. Krumland and Johnston assist SNHD in responding to communicable disease outbreaks by disseminating the knowledge, tools and resources to respond to outbreaks and keep the school community safe.

Johnston was born and raised in Ohio, and his family moved to Las Vegas in 1981. He worked as a plumber and pipefitter for various companies including his family’s own plumbing company until 1995. He joined the Facilities Unit at CCSD later that year, where he and his team worked together to ensure the school district complied with SNHD’s health and safety standards. In 2015, Johnston moved to CCSD’s Risk Management Department, where he serves as the district’s Safety Coordinator. In this role, he works to maintain and improve school safety and health for students and staff.

Krumland has devoted the majority of her professional career to CCSD. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration/financial services from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1995. Her introduction to CCSD as an intern in the Risk Management Department left a lasting impression and she secured a risk management position at CCSD in Sept. 1996. In her nearly 28 years with CCSD, she has developed and implemented numerous policies and programs involving claims, safety, insurance, health and environmental issues.

Roseman University of Health Sciences
Dr. Andria Peterson, Executive Director, EMPOWERED Program, is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to improving the health and well-being of pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorder (SUD). Through her leadership as Executive Director of the EMPOWERED Program, Dr. Peterson has identified gaps in care for infants and new parents affected by SUD and neonatal abstinence syndrome, leading to the development of comprehensive protocols and interventions. Her dedication, innovation, and tireless advocacy embody the essential services of public health.

Dr. Peterson joined the Roseman College of Medicine as executive director of the EMPOWERED program in 2021. Prior to that, she spent 12 years working as a clinical pharmacist in the pediatric and newborn intensive care units (NICU) at St. Rose Dominican Hospital. It was during this time that she co-founded the EMPOWERED program, a care coordination model designed to help pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorder navigate the path from recovery to stabilization to resilience. Dr. Peterson is also an assistant professor of pharmacy practice with Roseman University’s College of Pharmacy where she has taught since 2009. Additionally, she serves on Nevada’s Patient Protection Commission and is a Core Team Member of the Nevada Reproductive Health Network.
